Research topics

My initial research interests concerned the study of thinking processes in the absence of language. I have thus investigated both in human infants and in apes and monkeys the processes at work in the organization of objects and space. Then I have examined the role of hemispheric specialization in various motor and perceptual treatments. My recent interests focus on three questions:

  • The study of cognitive constraints that have led from communication to language. This work on the origin of language bears on the human precursors of asymmetrical organizations in hand usage (communicative gestures and object manipulations) both in human infants and in nonhuman primates.
  • The conditions of acquisitions of language in human infants through the study visual-auditory matching. To that purpose, an adaptation of the « Head Turn Preference Procedure » paradigm is used with 6-12 months old infants in association with tests of word comprehension.
  • The role of emotions in early mother-infant interactions and in particular in the asymmetrical patterns of infant holding and infant carrying. The investigation of the role of emotions is realized via observations and with experimental procedures requiring the technique of chimeric face tasks and of dichotic listening tasks.
